“Another great place to find cheap building materials and home improvement items is a place called Building Material Resources. It is in Sherwood. The address is 14175 SW Galbreath Dr. Sherwood, Oregon. 97140. They have new and used materials in doors, windows, lumber, hardware and the like.  Love that place!”

The stores offer a wide variety of antique, vintage and retro furniture, housewares, and collectibles. Since it is open every weekend the stock continually changes.  Prices are purposely kept low to get the items sold and keep people coming back!

Habitat for Humanity ReStore The ReStore is a discount outlet store that sells new and gently used materials, accessories and other building supplies that have been donated by businesses, builders and individuals. It is open to the public. Merchandise is discounted 25% to 75% off standard retail prices. All proceeds raised at the ReStore are used to build affordable homes for low-income families in the City of Portland. New inventory arrives daily.

Available materials include: windows, interior doors, bathtubs, toilets, sinks, appliances, lighting/electrical hardware, cabinets, flooring, drywall, tile, and assorted hardware, etc.

Submission update 02/14:  “Ask about our Building Material Recovery program. We perform non-structural deconstruction, removing cabinets, sinks, doors, appliances and other items for homeowners starting remodeling projects. Customers donate the items we remove and receive a tax deduction for their donation. We sell donated items in our stores to raise funds that help build Habitat homes. “Hardwood Flooring For Less.”  Open to the public.  Carries pre-finished and unfinished hardwood floors for residential and commercial construction, including laminate, bamboo, cork and butcher blocks.

NE Portland Tool Library Must be 18 or older and live in Northeast Portland west of 82nd Avenue.  Membership is free.  Open for borrowing on Saturdays 9am – 2pm, Tuesdays 5:30pm – 7:30pm and  Wednesdays 5:30pm-7:30pm. Located in the basement at Redeemer Lutheran Church at NE 20th Avenue and Killingsworth Street (entrance is on Killingsworth).  Tool library includes home-repair, gardening, cleaning and some electric tools.
North Portland Tool Library Must be a resident of North Portland!  The North Portland Tool Library (NPTL) is a community resource dedicated to building community and fostering sustainability by providing residents with tools and the power to use them. They loan a wide variety of tools to community members FREE of charge.  Located at Old Kenton Firehouse (basement)

SE Portland Tool Library Submission

“The SE Portland Tool Library is an all-volunteer library of home and garden tools which may be borrowed free of charge by SE Portland residents.

We are just like a library that lends books, we just happen to deal in saws, hammers, rakes, ladders, and  seeds! Membership is FREE!  You just have to be over 18 and a resident of SE Portland within SE Uplift’s boundaries.

We are a community resource that provides home owners and tenants with the tools they need to perform simple home maintenance, tend their yards and gardens, build furniture and projects – while along the way meeting and sharing with neighbors in this community sustainability project.”

The ReBuilding Center The ReBuilding Center is the region’s largest non-profit reuse center for salvaged construction and remodeling materials. Inventory includes sinks, tubs, tile, lumber, doors, windows, trim and much, much more.  The ReBuilding Center’s inventory is priced at 50 to 90% off the rates you would find for similar items in regular retail outlets.  Please see web site for current inventory.

In addition to the reuse warehouse, The ReBuilding Center includes DeConstruction Services, a sustainable alternative to conventional demolition, and ReFind Furniture, which offers a diverse line of green furniture and home accessories. We also offer a free-pick up service, numerous volunteer opportunities, donations of used building materials for community projects, as well as workshops and classes on how to safely and creatively work with used building materials.
